To reach this options page, select View > Options... > File Comparisons > File Types
The controls on this page are used to specify the type of comparison window that should be used to compare files of certain types.
When Merge needs to open a new comparison window, the names of the files being compared are checked against the patterns listed for each comparison type. If a pattern matches the file names, then its associated comparison type is used to perform the comparison. If no patterns match, a text comparison is used.

This control shows the types of non-text file comparison and the types of file for which they should preferrably be used.
